A Stegosaurus skeleton recently set a new record as the most valuable fossil ever sold at auction, fetching $44.6 million in New York. The sale was handled by an auction house. The fossil, nicknamed ‘Apex,’ exceeded its initial estimated value, which was between $4 million and $6 million. Apex was discovered in Moffat County, Colorado, in 2022, by a commercial paleontologist. It was well-preserved and measures 11 feet tall and nearly 27 feet long. The dinosaur’s bones suggest it was a large, adult individual, possibly with arthritis. While some paleontologists argue for public display in museums, the buyer plans to loan Apex to a U.S. institution.
